Anne update

My appologies to those who didn't get updated in the last email. I'll start off by including that. Others can skip down to today's, which follows.   Jan. 21

Anne's out-patient surgery went well. The surgeon said that the tumor is actually 2cm, not the 1cm that he'd thought from the PeTscan. Anne had said that her radiologist warned her that it was too soon after her radiation treatments and that the images wouldn't be accurate.

None-the-less, her oncologist is pleased with the tumor's shrinkage so far. He took a biopsy and when the results come back he'll know if he's going to to be doing a "little surgery or a big surgery", as he put it.
Anne's was bleeding very heavily and having pain afterwards.  She's on vicodin for the pain and is a bit light-headed. Earlier today she was nauseaous, but that passed once she laid down.
I had taken these two days off just for this reason. I'm keeping an eye on her and making sure she stay's down and manages her pain. Lady is helping, too, being Anne's constant companion and nap-partner!

Jan. 25

Anne went to the doctor's yesterday and Julie went with her as I thought the appointment was for today. So, I was at work when she was told that the biopsy revealed the tumor was malignant. I really needed to be there, but wasn't, and I'm sorry. If someone you love is going to be given such harrowing news, please be sitting next to them when it happens. There's no way to re-do it later.
Dr. Lim is going to have to do "the big surgery". This means he will be opening her up and see what else, if anything, is affected. Whatever is in contact with the cancer will have to come out. He'll be doing the surgery with a robotic system called the "da Vinci Robotic Surgical System" so as to be as minimally invasive as possible. (See below for links) This will reduce the time necessary for recovery.
The recovery will be a minimum of 1 week in the hospital afterwards and possibly 2-3 weeks. This all depends on how much needs to be removed and what kind of reconstruction that entails. It's possible that she will lose her bladder and have to wear a bag. Needless to say, this is all very upsetting.
Last night we went to the store and picked up some ice cream. Then we watched Nights In Rodanthe while eating Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia. Anne wanted to watch something that would take her mind off things and I think it did give her some reprieve.
She didn't sleep well last night and this morning she doesn't want to get out of bed. So, I'm letting her sleep while I write this. I'm going in late so that I can be here when she gets up.
Please keep praying and sending the golden light of healing for her,
Don and Anne
